How does The Grief Recovery Method® differ from therapy?

The Grief Recovery Method® is a series of steps specifically designed to help you recover from major loss within a set time frame. Unlike traditional therapy, The Grief Recovery Method® comes with a pre-established framework, a distinct focus on grief, and a limited number of meetings.

Fundamentally we believe that Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss. It is not a pathological condition, nor is it a personality disorder. The Grief Recovery Method® is an educational experience, based on the fact that most of us were never taught effective tools for dealing with grief. Participants find that any subsequent therapy is enhanced by their experience in the workshop. In fact, many therapists refer clients to the workshop

No one has died but I still have this sense of loss. Can this programme help?

Loss has different faces, including changes in relationships, life's transitions, the loss of self-esteem, faith and direction and the loss of health. The Grief Recovery Method® is designed for all types of loss and grief.

What do the Grief Recovery Method sessions look like?

During each session, you’ll be welcomed into a confidential, non-judgmental space where you’ll be expected to share the truth of your story as it happened to you. You’ll also be expected to complete weekly reading and homework assignments and perform certain actions to complete your grief

From us, you can expect open ears and an open heart ready to receive your story. We are also available to answer logistical questions about the programme.

It's too soon because the loss has happened recently. Shouldn't I wait?

When can you begin to discover and complete all of the things that you wish had ended “different, better or more,” and all of the broken “hopes, dreams, and expectations” about the future? The answer is immediately.

It’s in the time immediately following a loss (divorce included) that our memories of that relationship are most vivid and accurate. Even through the perceived “numbness” that accompanies grief there is easy and instant access to both finished and unfinished business in the relationship.

Waiting to do grief work is potentially dangerous. Most likely you know that grievers tend to create larger than life memory pictures in which they either “enshrine or bedevil” the person who died. This phenomenon increases with time, making it more difficult to discover and complete the “truth” within the relationship.

Do you work with children?

Yes, but not directly. The Grief Recovery Method is a programme for adults, for individuals 18 and older. With children 17 years and younger, we offer "Helping Children with Loss" for parents or caretakers, teachers, case or ministry youth workers, grandparents, etc. These caretakers are equipped to help the youth in their care to work through current grief or learn the skills and tools to deal with future losses

Will I feel better immediately? How effective is this programme?

Grievers have reported feeling lighter and having more energy and control over their lives. This is because the individual is further along on their recovery from emotional pain. They feel a level of completion with the emotional relationship with the person involved or with the event which caused them grief.

The effectiveness of the programme has been researched and documented and information can be found at this link.

Must I attend every session?

The aim is to complete your grief and there are no half measures if you truly want to get the results. This is a step by step process and every step must be attended to. If you miss a session, you will be asked to reschedule to do a catch up. If circumstances prevent you from completing the course and you wish to restart the process you will be starting again from the first session. We will be with you through the journey.

Who conducts the sessions?

Only trained and certified Grief Recovery Method Specialists certified by the Grief Recovery Method Institute are licensed to facilitate all sessions. This is a professional certificate requiring a minimum of 32 hours foundational training, up to 24 hours specialised training plus practicum experience. All Grief Recovery Method Specialists are required to go through the programme themselves so we know it works.
